How ‘design firms’ are transforming the way you work in the 21st century


The design and construction industry is in flux, with designers now in the middle of a “design boom,” and a new wave of companies seeking to create and sell their wares.

Here’s what you need to know.


What is design? 

A design firm is a company that creates and sells products or services that can be used to create an idea, or to design, design, or design a new one.

The word is derived from the Latin designare, meaning “to design.”

Its roots go back to ancient Greece, and is the Greek word for a house, a palace, a temple, or a building.


Why is design changing? 

“Designers are more than just designers,” says David A. Miller, vice president of business development for design firm IsoDesign.

“They are people with a unique passion for building and designing, a knack for creating and creating.”

Miller’s firm, which works with the likes of Adidas, The Home Depot, and a few other design firms, has offices in New York and Chicago.

It works with a wide range of clients from architects and architects-in-residence to big-name brands.


Why do designers want to work in this field? 

Miller says designers are looking to help clients “make better products” by designing products that work better, more efficiently, and with more comfort and ease of use.

“Designers want to make something that people are going to use, not just something that they are going do,” he says.


What do designers need to understand about their products? 

The firm says the most important factor in designing a product is its fit, function, and functionality.

“It’s a little bit like a business decision: Do I want to sell a car or a home or a brand?

The best way to do that is to build something that will meet the needs of all the different users in the market,” says Miller.


How does it work? 

There are four types of designers in the design industry: designers who specialize in one or more of the following: Designing materials, designing and building structures, designing furniture, and designing products and services. 

Designers typically specialize in products that have two or more key elements: functionality, comfort, and ease-of-use.

The company that hires the most designers in any given year will get the most business.


Which brands and services are targeting the industry? 

While the design and building industry is “trending,” Miller says that not everyone is looking to do something specifically for this sector.

“If I’m looking to work on furniture, I’m not necessarily looking at furniture companies,” he said.


What does the new “designer boom” mean for the business? 

At the same time that the design firm boom is on the rise, there are also many changes taking place in the field of technology and the Internet.

In the past, companies were able to design and sell products on a shoestring basis.

The advent of the internet, however, means that companies can now design and build products for large-scale scale, and that’s where a lot of the “designers” and “architects” are going. 


Which of these trends will be the dominant one? 

Design is one of the oldest and most popular professions, but the industry is now changing in a number of ways. 

There is a growing interest in creating and selling high-end products.

Designers are beginning to specialize in furniture. 

Businesses are moving toward designing and manufacturing products for home use, rather than for office or retail use. 

The “design revolution” is also starting to take place.

“We’ve seen the rise of a lot more design firms than we have designers,” Miller said.
